Business is good in Spearfish, S.D., Tim Baldwin said – especially since he moved HomeSource Furniture & Floors into a larger space in a more favorable location.
“It’s been really good,” he said. “Our sales are up. Our traffic count is up.”
Baldwin and his wife, Mary Beth, bought O’Neills Furniture and Carpet in 2014 and gave the business a new name, but activity was gravitating away from its 12th Street address. So, when Baldwin learned that department store Bomgaars was vacating its space on East Colorado Boulevard in a much busier part of town, he acted quickly. The move was completed in May.
“The visibility of this location compared to the other store is like night and day,” Baldwin said.
The Home Furnishings Association member now occupies about one-third more space than previously – a 20,000-square-foot showroom plus another 6,500 square feet of warehouse space. The extra room lets them carry more inventory and a wider selection.
HomeSource sells all kinds of home and outdoor furnishings and flooring. Baldwin employs two salespeople, two delivery drivers and two warehouse staff. Most of their deliveries are within 40 miles but sometimes go out farther.
So far, no one else has been hired, but “if sales remain constant, I think we’ll have to expand our staff,” Baldwin said. “We’re all just working our fannies off.”
Contributing to his store’s success is the Spearfish community and beyond. With about 12,000 people, Spearfish is growing. It’s just north of Black Hills National Forest and about 50 miles northwest of Rapid City on Interstate 90. The Old West town of Deadwood lies just a few miles south. “The Spirit of the American Cowboy” plays two nights a week from July 9 until Aug. 1 at the High Plains Western Heritage Center in Spearfish, offering a chuck wagon dinner and a show. The Matthews Opera House and Arts Center stages summer theater, with help from the Black Hills State University drama department. And, of course, the area affords abundant opportunities for outdoor activities.
Many of his customers own second-home cabins in the hills and canyons, Baldwin said, but most are local homebuyers furnishing their houses or replacing flooring. With more products to see at HomeSource Furniture & Floors, they are keeping Baldwin and his staff busy these days.
