HFA member Star Furniture is making the holiday season a little brighter for a family in its community.
Ahlam Al Battal, 38, and her husband, Sami Ashour, 48, of Austin, Texas, were uprooted from their quiet lives in Syria until the civil unrest there uprooted the couple. They were living comfortably in a suburb of Damascus, before the was destroyed their neighborhood. They fled for their safety to Jordan and lived in a refugee camp before eventually settling in the United States in Austin.
That’s where Star Furniture came through, donating new living room furniture to the couple through the local newspaper’s Statesman Season for Caring program.
“There are good people here,” Al Battal says. “I hope my children grow up to be good people. Successful people. They can do that in this country.”
The family’s current collection of used furniture won’t be thrown away. “They are so conscientious about making sure unneeded things go to some refugees they know need stuff,” said Lu Zeidan, program director at Interfaith Action, who is working with the family.
